The person behind Orion

I built Orion as a résumé tool. It did not stay one.

In 2008 I was out of work in Chicago, sending out hundreds of applications that went nowhere. Years of applying since then told me I was not the only one struggling with it. So I started building Orion to help people use AI on their own job search without needing to be experts in it.

Then I sat beside someone with her own string of rejections, after most of a career at one company. Nothing on the page was untrue. It had almost nothing of her in it. That exposed the problem with my own tool: it could only work with what she already knew to tell it, and it never asked her a question that might bring the rest out.

That changed what I was building. Before Orion could help anyone write about themselves, it had to help them find what was worth saying. The experience behind the job title. The details they took for granted. The things they never thought to mention.

So Orion starts with questions and builds from the answers. Résumés were the beginning. What it became is a way to recognize what you have to say, and to have the words ready when it counts.

Any AI writes from what you paste into it, so you have to already know what matters about your work. Orion asks you first and keeps every answer exactly as you said it. What it writes then comes out of those answers alone, from a Record that gets richer every time you use it. Out of that same Record: a résumé and cover letter tailored to one posting, a LinkedIn About section, the answers you will have to defend in an interview, a letter to someone who matters, a post or an article in your voice, and a prompt you can hand to any other AI.

No. A résumé helps and you can upload one, but Orion works from the first answer you give it. Whatever version you have now, however out of date, becomes the frame rather than the ceiling.

Each conversation runs about five minutes and you go at your own pace. There is no fixed number of sessions. Answer one now, come back whenever you like, and the Record works from the first answer you give.

Your Record is private by default. Nothing leaves it for a résumé, a letter, a post, or anywhere else without you saying so. You can export the whole thing or delete it at any time.
